THE COVID WEST | AN ALTERNATIVE HISTORY

A classified, party-backed vaccine is developed in the makeshift laboratory of a civilian biochemist turned political prisoner- the peculiarly named ‘simulation 631991’.

~

The Covid West is a reaction to the abiding anxieties surrounding the political, economic and social impacts of the coronavirus outbreak as they continue to affect the modern western world, authored in the midst of a worldwide quarantine. As we struggle to cope with an increasingly fundamental mistrust of our governmental systems, we are also forced to question the sincerity of our leaders as we navigate a media culture awash in a cartoonish brand of absurdity that has never been seen before.

The Covid West is a neo-western that lives in a parallel universe not so distant from ours, setting a scene that belies the tenor of a traditional socioeconomic landscape- a world where scientists are held hostage in their basements for political gain, and injecting disinfectant is much less newsworthy than it is mundane.

The film was shot, edited and produced on location in Albuquerque, New Mexico during quarantine with 54 dollars and a crew of four, (including on screen talent) three of which were green to traditional production workflows. The director, cinematographer, sound person, editor, writer and producer Alan Jensen is a commercial cinematographer based in New York, originally from Albuquerque.

RACHEL, NEVADA is an observation of the events surrounding the 'Storm Area 51' phenomena in the weeks leading up to Sept. 20th, 2019 at 3AM PT- a methodical and isolated effort to document the physical results of the internet mania that built the now infamous 'non-event' event at its original location in Rachel, Nevada.

LOST EPISODE: THE DISSENT OF PARIS AND ANTEROS ON THE BEHALF OF ONE MORTAL HEARTBREAK, A FIGHT FOR THE RECENTLY WEDDED MRS. BLUEBIRD, 6:50
Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2018

Paris, (@ΠάριςWageswar, Paris Of Troy) having felt the cosmic gravity of a heartbreak echoing in the distant future, agrees to challenge the greek god Anteros (The god of requited love, @AnterosLead0rDead) in a duel of spiritual and physical strength on the behalf of a mortal man who is struggling with the loss of his true love, the recently wedded Mrs. Bluebird. It is her brisk and inflexible departure from their relationship that sparks an invocation to the god Anteros, who hesitantly reaffirms the natural flow of their broken love. Upon hearing news of this, Paris, reflecting on his infamous bout with Helen Of Troy, takes it upon himself to protest and bend the fundamentals of mythology in order to change the course of The Mortal’s romantic trajectory, citing his sincerity and the purity of his pain as an unparalleled truth worth fighting for.
We find Paris and Anteros racing separately to The Quantum Veil, a time rip located in central New Mexico, where they will grapple to determine the course of The Mortal's love, forever.

DINA (2016) is an impromptu, free form documentary short produced on location in Las Vegas, Nevada during the course of a sleepy family vacation. The subject of the film, Dina, is a Vegas native and blind mother of two who performs for donations on the strip in a strange and unconventional manner; she is neither a curiosity or novelty to tourists and passers by like the performers around her, but rather a fixture of busking culture and a characterization of homelessness that appear to render her invisible in passing.

In contrast to this perspective, Dina stands out from the traditionally exaggerated, highly caricatured topography of performers in Las Vegas. Unlike many of the loud and animated one liners that flood the strip and rely on recycled street acting culture to demand attention, Dina’s performance is fraught with an unusual tension between the sullen desperation of cold soul in search of shelter, and the lighthearted orchestration of a karaoke performer at her peak.

Half way through the production of the film, Dina was joined unannounced by her two children, wheelchair bound father, and her husband, who had apparently come to watch her perform and take her home at the end of the day. The children were spirited and earnest in front of the camera, and as they danced in excitement, a small crowd began to gather. Despite the context of the performance, the family maintained a candid euphoria.

I did not find it necessary to interrogate Dina about her life, why she was performing or what her driving circumstances were, but rather made a sincere attempt at illuminating a distinctly peculiar and aesthetic performance that might have been given very little time otherwise.

The film was extemporarily shot over the course of two hours on the 1st of January, 2016, entirely in camera and on a small stabilizer with no other equipment or crew.
